Cobweb Shawl

Yesterday was the perfect day. The sun shone, the wind was out of town and I made felt in the garden before visiting Cemlyn Beach where the tide was in and people waded up to their waists in the sea.

I had intended the above piece to be nuno felted and then to dye it with blackberries ready to be made into a dress for my little girl, but I experimented with some silk like fabrics that I bought in a sari shop back in Birmingham. The fabric nuno felted just fine but felt so synthetic that I was not happy with it at all. I peeled off the silky layer which took a while but was worth it. I was left with a very thin felted shawl which I manipulated holes into the thinnest parts in a cobweb effect. I really like it so will leave it white for a while. Lets hope this Indian summer is here to stay and I get many more breeze free days ideal for setting up in the garden. I still want to make a dress for my little girl, and have ideas for nuno felted, solar dyed blind/curtains for the windows.

Adding and taking away from the materials we work with is one of the most infuriating and enjoyable things about making art, I find.

Don't you people have laws against child labor? That's okay, school will be a rest for her...

Just sending you a package, you may be able to incorporate some of the materials (if they don't disintegrate en route).

When I double clicked I was surprised that it looked like a spun fairy tale to me..all purple and glistening. What a beautiful piece you have created.

Hi Faerwillow, I hope Mr sun stays too. Happy September and autumn whispers to you sweet lady x

Hi Susan, There is only so much political correctness one person is capable of. I care for the trees, the animals and the environment, oh yeah, and the homeless. Children, however, must help make their own dresses, and pick the blackberries too I'm afraid :) x

Hi Michaela, I have optimistic feelings about this Indian summer x

Cheryl, thank you. Its been a long time since I've had the time or space to make felt. Its been like being reunited with an old friend x

Hi Assaya, thank you. It reminds me of a blanket I made for Manya's 'Art for Trees' project last year. The stones are a work in progress. I'm in the process of building a rockery right now. Some of the beaches and rocks on the Island have amazing geological qualities it has rekindled a love for them. x

Often the intent of what I make ends up being something else altogether different. Curtains sound just fine to me.

Love the new blog layout. The shawl is HUGE, no wonder you had to do it in the garden. Here's hoping for some more sunny days.

Thank you Manon :)

Tammie - Thank you. It feels good to have Naomi at school and a little space to do things that I like to do. I'm sure I will get much more creative work done now.

Thank you Caio. Its good to see you back. I'm looking forward to seeing the next pages of your book :)

T - I've had a mind to make net style curtains with curls for a while. I made a couple of scarves over the summer like that as gifts for friends and I feel larger pieces with less wool and more curls would look wonderful against the windows in winter x

Happy September Theresa, wishing continued warm weather for you too :)

Hi Yvette, lovely to see you back here. Wishing you healing thoughts and love xx

Hi Martine, I will show the dress when it is ready. It won't be made in one piece, I intend to make it flat and then sew it, but that will be a challenge to me a I am just learning about my sewing machine x

Hi Fiona, I've just been over to Tizduster. Your felted bag is beautiful. You must make felt more often, I love your work xxJ
